Integrated comparative limiting stress tests of cylindrical specimens of steel 12 Kh 18N12T have been carried out to verify the hypothesis about the causes of local damage in steam pipe metal. It is found that it is possible to extend operating life of austenitic steel pipes by carrying out a number of measures, including austenization of bends and butt weld zones at the temperature of 1150-1170 degree C with 30 min holding and cooling in air, and with subsequent elimination of the contact of steam pipe metal contact with thermal insulation by inserting an austenitic foil between them.
