For high efficiency of helical gears axial bearings can be dropped at the fast revolving pinion drive shaft if the axial forces are directed to the slow revolving gear wheel shaft. This can be achieved by means of axial guidance rings close to the pitch circle. Main work task is to prove the load capacity of the lubricating oil film in the axial guidance ring contact through utilization of the EHD-theory. Significant design and lubrication influences on the load capacity are identified and reviewed.
