The Ti-6Al-4V alloy was used to investigate the crack opening at the tip of a crack (or crack opening stretch, COS), under unidirectional load. It is shown that COS is constant along the crack front. The onset of crack propagation can be obtained from the COS-COD curve. For 6 mm wide specimens, COS at the onset of crack propagation is independent of the crack length.
