Three linear thermotropic liquid crystalline polyesters have been synthesized, which contain a cyclooctyl unit. The inclusion of this saturated ring lowers both melting and liquid crystalline (LC) ranges when compared with wholly aromatic systems. The mesophase range could also be affected by inclusion of polar substituents and it was found that a bromo substituent gave the widest LC temperature range.
