The proposed coating classification and scheme of property correlations provides an effective tool for overcoming the basic problems of the gravity diecasting process, viz. castings quality and die life. The coating group, type and class analysis indicates the direction and scope of development work to establish the composition required. It was found that a combination of diffusion chromizing (group g, type B) and a liquid dressing (group a, type A) would prolong the life of gray cast iron dies by a factor of 5 and yield a saving of 5 roubles tonne of castings.
