The article is devoted to the problem of weight optimization of gears. Gear schemes are compared with respect to weight which is determined by means of the base stage method elaborated by the author. Weight equations for simple, planetary and combined gears are presented and their solutions are obtained. A graph is drawn up to compare two-stage gears of different schemes with weight-optimal distribution of gear ratios of stages. A formula is recommended for the determination of the value of the weight-optimal gear ratio of the first stage of two-stage gears.
