Lighting is the second most important energy end-use;
after cooking;
in rural households. While considerable efforts and resources have been devoted toward development and dissemination of improved designs of cookstoves in India (Bhatt;
1990;
Quadir et al;
1995;
Rubab;
Kandpal;
1996a);
similar efforts for lighting end-use in rural areas are not forthcoming. There are very few instances of improving the existing rural lighting technologies or the introduction of new technologies for provision of good-quality lighting. An attempt to improve the kerosene Welsbach mantle lamp;
popularly known as petromax in India;
has been reported by Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (Rajvanshi & Kumar;
1989). It is worth mentioning that a host of newer designs of electric lamps and The financial assistance provided to one of the authors (Seemin Rubab) by CSIR;
