Prediction of the Initial and Deferred Settlement of the Shallow Foundations.

The part played respectively by the initial settlement and by the deferred settlement, the sum of the two being the final settlement is discussed. A method taking into account the properties of the soil and the geometry of the foundation is presented with examples of numerical application. To obtain these results a statement is made concerning the conventional parameters of pore pressure and relations are established between the properties of the soil in the undrained state (which govern the initial settlement) and its properties in the drained state (which govern the final settlement).
