摘要：

The subject of expert systems has recently attracted a great deal of attention from diverse disciplines such as finance, medicine, science and engineering. Although there are a number of expert systems already implemented in South Africa, the majority of these exist in the commercial or financial sectors. Expert systems have yet to make a significant impact in South African engineering. This article introduces expert systems to the uniniated and suggests possible areas in engineering where expert systems could make a significant contribution.
