A common way of controlling a dc motor is to control the velocity by inputting a voltage into a servo controller. The servo controller typically reaches and maintains the velocity of the dc motor by using feedback from a tachometer connected to the motor. During the transient time when the system is going to a new velocity, the acceleration is fixed by the servo controller to a value which depends on the wattage of the controller, the motor, and the load on the motor. Voltage controller servo systems are widely available and easy to control. However, the acceleration rate is fixed. A technique for controlling the acceleration rate with a standard voltage controller servo system is described.
