Based on early investigations concerned with typical exhaust emissions and limits for large diesel engines, the MTU 396-03 series was selected for determining the extent by which nitric oxides could be reduced through modifications within the engine itself. By using a modified injection system and appropriately adapted turbocharging, it was possible to reduce NO//x by more than 50% for 1500 rpm electricity generation. The underlying reason was that the period of combustion could be considerably shortened and the start of combustion retarded with no adverse consequences as regards exhaust temperature or black discoloration.
