Studies on the utilization of glucose and starch as an energy source of grass carp

A 10-week growth trial and an isotope experiment were conducted to study the carbohydrate utilization by grass carp. The outcomings showed that fish fed glucose diet had significantly (P less than or equal 0.05) higher relative growth rate, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio than those fed starch diet and fish fed 14-glucose exhaled extraordinarily more 14Co2 every 2 hours within 24 hours than those fed 14C-starch. The results suggested that glucose appear to be a more excellent energy source than starch in grass carp.
