As a result of extensive development work during the last decade, the control parameters of traditional surface-hardening processes have been optimized and a number of process variants such as glow-discharge nitriding and fluidized-bed carburizing have been introduced. This paper reviews these developments with the object of establishing the relative advantages of different processes in order that they may be applied correctly.
