The lecture was composed of two main subjects, fiber supply and environmental issues. Demand for paper goods will continue to increase, but global fiber supply is limited. Pulp companies must compete for forest resources directly (with other forest users) and indirectly (with non-forestry demands for land use). One projection is that the demand for forest resources will exceed the supply by 2025. To secure a stable fiber supply, pulping non-wood species is one approach to assuring an adequate fiber supply. Paper companies should be researching non-wood species utilization and wastepaper recycling. In addition to these works, they must build their reputation for environmental stewardship. Three environmental issues that paper companies should consider are: -ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification. -Greenhouse gas emissions reduction and controls. -Water consumption and recycling.
