At the moment savings of resources are urgent for ferrous metallurgy which uses some 9 % of fuel and power consumption in the country with the material share of the total industrial consumption of 80 %. Resource and power intensity of iron making depends on many factors: the quality of iron ore and coke, thermal and reduction processes, implementation of production, etc. Consideration is being given to every factor affecting savings in metal and power. Particular emphasis is placed on the optimization of the coal burden content when making coke. Starting in 1990, depression in metallurgical industry led to recession in iron making and resource saving. Under market conditions, this raises the question as the state support of metallurgy as a special field of national problems.
