Present technical methods for transforming coal into automotive fuels are discussed. The overall thermal efficiency is used as an important economic criterium in the evaluation of the different processes. Capital investment and production costs are determined and compared with each other. Finally, the influence of the selling price of gaseous products on the cost of automotive liquid fuels is analyzed.
