The rapid advance of the aerospace industry in the past 30 years has been matched by an equally dramatic growth of the titanium industry. Titanium alloys, much stronger than aluminum, yet half the density of steel and able to operate up to 600°C provide as raw materials the answer to many applications problems. The link between material and application is product availability and design and nowhere perhaps has this link proved more of a challenge both to the titanium manufacturer and the product fabricator than in the production of sheet and aircraft structures made from sheet.
