Introduced is a novel dual-drive speaker system that satisfies the need for home theater speaker systems capable of accurately locating audio images and reproducing powerful bass sound from a small-volume cabinet, with the cabinet harmonizing with the large screen and facilitating installation. The following considerations led to the design of the DS-S1 speaker: 1. Intention to build a space-saving column-style cabinet with a powerful bass response and small interior volume. 2. Development of an elliptical cross section for the cabinet to suppress diffraction effects that would interfere with image clarity and ambience. 3. Adoption of a two-way system in which a separate mid-high frequency speaker covers the frequencies above the response of the dual-drive woofers and extends the latter to 200Hz to achieve the necessary smooth crossover. 4. Particular concern that the bass response be impressively powerful, hence the term 'super-bass.' The design goals were achieved using a tube-like enclosure that employs two woofer units in a dual-drive configuration. The dual-drive configuration contributes to speaker performance by doubling the power-handling capacity and allowing the frequency response to be smoothed through determining the correct size for the chamber between the woofers. This design represents an evolutionary step above the DDSS system previously developed by Mitsubishi.
