The interaction between plasma particles in a magnetic well with helical magnetic field lines (for example, in a stellarator) and the electric field due to a low-frequency (drift) instability is considered. It is shown that even when the amplitude of the electrostatic oscillations is small, phi less than kT//e/e, the radial displacement of the particles (ions and trapped electrons) can be larger than the displacement computed from the neoclassical theory. The present estimates are compared with experiment.
