The Huxtable Pumping Plant located near Marianna, Arkansas is the largest stormwater pumping station in the world. During flood season, this station keeps the overflowing Mississippi River from moving upstream through the St. Francis basin. This basin contains some of the richest farmland in Arkansas. It is for this reason that the pumping station cannot afford to have any discharge of a potential pollutant. The potential for pollution from the pumping operations led Bill T. Duke, the plant superintendent, to use the readily biodegradable, virtually nontoxic vegetable oil-based Mobil EAL lubricants. The pumping plant not only meets its goal of flood control, but it also makes a great contribution to environmental protection.
