The magnetic susceptibility of the Ge-Se alloys in the amorphous and liquid states was measured by the Faraday method using a torsion balance. The diamagnetic susceptibility of the amorphous alloys decreases upon crystallization. The difference in the susceptibility between the amorphous and the crystalline state is very small in the Se-Rich region up to the composition of GeSe//2, but it increases beyond this composition. In the amorphous state, the addition of Ge slightly increases the diamagnetism of Se. This corresponds to the composition dependence of the interatomic distances of these alloys. The temperature and the composition dependence of the susceptibility of the liquid alloys show that the Ge-Se system in the liquid state becomes metallic with increasing Ge content in the Ge-rich region beyond the composition of GeSe//2.
