Along with the expansion of application fields for single-chip microcomputer, there have been increasing demands for involatile data storage, optimal control to adjust deviation in device performance characteristics, and built-in programmable write/erase facilities. To meet these demands, Hitachi has developed the HD65901 and HD40122 EEPROM (electrically erasable and programmable ROM) on-chip, 8-bit single-chip microcomputers. These are based on 2 mu m CMOS process technology, MNOS (metal nitride oxide semiconductor) EEPROM circuit design technology and VLSI modular design. The HD65901 is best for involatile data storage such as used by IC cards and data banks. The HD40122 is most suitable for controlling such equipment as VTR tuners and automobile engines.
