Results are presented on the feasibility of using electroosmosis at hazardous waste sites to precisely control the flow of leachate and groundwater, to inject sealants and to partly dewater contaminated aquifers. Equations are derived that enable a numerical simulation that gives the flow and electrical patterns in and around a simulated waste site for coupled electroosmotic-hydraulic flow for different site geometries, electrode configurations, and values of the physicochemical parameters. The power of the electroosmosis to divert groundwater flow is clearly shown by numerical example. Laboratory tests employing kaolin clay saturated with an organic acid suggest the efficiency of electroosmotic control.
