The Carver Hobson QDS gauge control system consists of a gauging station interfaced directly with a microcomputer, with data going directly on file for storage either on magnetic tape or on rigid or floppy discs. The gauging station has a fixed anvil and a square-section quill, supported on air bearings, which carries the measuring probe. Measuring ranges cover the span 150 to 300 mm. The measuring system is a Heidenhain Minilid 300 with read-out and a resolution of 0. 001 mm. The probe is applied with a constant force under the control of an adjustable pressure regulating valve. This part of the equipment is straightforward and conventional, but it is the direct connection to the microcomputer which breaks new ground. According to the amount of data which needs to be recorded, information on as many as 5000 different gauges can be held on one disc. The data can be retrieved for display on the integral VDU, and if a printer is added a hard copy can be called for.
