In the paper the results of optimization of thin-walled sandwich cylindrical shell under compressive load are presented. The face layers of the shell are made of aluminum alloy or stainless steel, the core is made of foamed plastic. As the cost function the weight of shell is taken and as the constraints the condition of stability and a strength condition were taken. The results of numerical analysis for aluminum alloy shell, steel shell and aluminum-steel shell are presented in the form of tables. In the paper the comparison between sandwich and unilayer shells is presented and superiority of the sandwich construction is shown.
