Source Separation of food wastes for composting is being tried in a number of Canadian communities, ranging from Metro Toronto's $DL2 million back yard composting effort, to weekly curbside collection of 'wet' wastes from 200 households in Ryley, Alberta. These projects focus on producing a high quality compost by reducing contaminant potential from other materials in the waste stream. European experiences with source separated organics collection and composting have served as models for some of these projects.
