Removal of a tank should only be done by a company with skills in removing tanks containing flammable, combustible or hazardous substances. Before removal, tanks should be thoroughly cleaned, gas free and handled in such a way as to prevent the posibility of causing ignition of any gases that may collect. Environmental agencies have regulations governing what concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons that are acceptable as a residue in soil. After all necessary tests have been performed, and contaminants are determined to be below limits, then the tank excavation site can be refilled with clean common borrow. A site should be closed as soon as possible to prevent any possible recontamination.
