Conventional high speed film photography is one of very few good methods for strain measurement. Some reasons for this are discussed, with some comparison to the high speed video systems now on the market as the best known alternative. Cinematography had the advantage of making noncontact measurements over entire sample faces; it also provided, by definition, a permanent record of each test.
