This paper analyzes the characteristics and synchronization phenomena of an oscillatory system composed of RC distributed line and a saturating amplifier, and the analytical results are compared with results obtained on an experimental system. The method of analysis consists of expressing the equivalent amplifier gain by means of a describing function to set up the circuit equations. The sine-wave stationary response is then determined and, using the circuit equation, a method is presented which permits determination of the stability of the stationary solution. Using this method there are obtained such characteristics as the conditions for self-oscillation, the frequency of oscillation, the oscillation voltage and the stability of the solution; also for several cases, numerical evaluation is made of the synchronization phenomena for given external force. From the experimental study it is found that, when the amplifier gain is not too great, that is, when the nonlinearity is small, the computed values match the experimental values quite well.
