At the recent Advanced Manufacturing Systems Exposition in Chicago, more than 455 top executives were asked about their plans to invest in Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). Sixty-two percent of them indicated intentions to purchase one or more CIM products in the next two years. But it takes more than hardware and software to reap the benefits of CIM. Computers may be the focal point of CIM, but integration is the real issue. That is why the Manufacturing Automation Protocol (MAP) and other related standardization efforts are so important to the future of manufacturing. Various problems connected with standardization are discussed in the article, along with implementation considerations.
