This paper deals with a locomotive remote control system, which is composed of two subsystems. The data communication subsystem based on wireless LAN permits simultaneous control of several locomotives from separate transmitters utilizing a single licensed frequency. The automatic operation subsystem based on fuzzy control is designed to control train operation as skillfully as experienced operators. The fail-safe design for this system are discussed in detail.
