Single-photon counting has been used to measure scintillation pulse-shapes from solutions of p-terphenyl in cyclohexane-benzene mixtures excited by beta -particles: they show a marked dependence on composition and on magnetic field. The results demonstrate the role of geminate recombination of solute ions in producing excited states and throw light on current controversies about the initial production of triplet states and the role of hole transport in cyclohexane.
