Firing blended residual fuel in an aircraft derivative gas turbine is now operationally successful. Until now, testing had resulted in rampant turbine corrosion or very rapid turbine fouling. Since both turbine corrosion and fouling are related to poor combustion efficiency, the combustion process must be vastly improved to burn residual fuels. Some applications use air atomizing fuel nozzles, spill flow nozzles and other mechanical means of producing good atomization.
