CONSTRUCTION ON PEATY BASES.

Peaty bases are those which contain, within the compressible mass limits, soil layers or lenses which have a significant content of organic remnants or which are located in swamped areas. In both cases, the presence of peat causes difficulties in the design and construction of buildings and structures. In construction on peaty soils, for correct evaluation of conditions and substantiation of technical solutions it is necessary to consider the following factors: (1) The type of structure on the whole, the characteristics of the constructional elements, their sensitivity to foundation settlements; (2) Engineering-geologic conditions, soil properties, and experience with construction under similar soil conditions: (3) Construction technology, its effect on the soils, measures for soil conservation during the construction period.
