This paper reports on the new approach to plastic-on-plastic coating by using electrostatic powder coating (ESPC) techniques. Although plastic-on-plastic applications are still so new that many suppliers and custom ESPC houses question whether the market will represent substantial volume, there now is no question about the technical feasibility of the concept. It has been proved in both laboratory and semicommercial tests. And some of the parts tested would seem to indicate a sizable market indeed. Some examples include reinforced polyester and EPDM automotive panels and front ends, appliance handles and parts, wide PE webs, and layered plastic-on-plastic glass bottle coatings.
