Procedures for sampling, sample preparation and methods for the determination of the main elements contained in sponge iron as well as accuracies of and time required for the determinations are reported. Total, as well as metallic iron, are determined titrimetrically, the latter by the bromine-methanol-method, phosphorus, and the elements constituting the gangue by X-ray fluorescence, carbon and sulphur by combustion. The total time required for the comprehensive determination is three hours as compared to two days if three determination of the gangue were to be done wet-chemically, and six hours if it were done by atomic absorption.
