FATIGUE CRACK INITIATION AND GROWTH IN HY100 STEEL SUBJECT TO IN-PLANE BIAXIAL LOADING.

Fatigue studies have been carried out on steel to study the effects of in-plane biaxial loading upon: crack initiation, Mode I or normal crack growth, and Mode II crack growth. Applied biaxial stress states were achieved by using flat cruciform shaped specimens. For Mode I or normal crack growth a tensile component of stress parallel to the crack was found to decrease crack growth rate; a compressive component was seen to have the opposite effect. These changes could be explained by the differing cyclic stress/strain behavior of equibiaxial and shear loading, and in particular by the extent of crack tip plasticity.
