The Integrated Database Management System and Application Development System on-line were introduced by Iowa DOT to come up with centralized inventory, warehouse management function, on-line order entry using radio frequency communication and bar code, and cycle count. Accuracy of field inventory was improved following this decision using an IBM ES9000 9021, a multidrop SNA leased line network connecting 1800 display terminals and personal computers in an SNA 3270 communications environment. The real-time warehousing system, in effect, improved customer service and productivity.
