Government's antiproliferation stance has disrupted the fuel cycle and clouded the industry horizon. Reactions in government and industry aim to lessen its impact and resolve the immediate questions raised by the disruption. In view of the prospect of exhausting the spent fuel storage space at the nuclear power plants in the near future efforts are made to expand the storage facilities. Packaging and permanent disposal of spent fuels is considered, in particular geological storage in salt deposits.
