After describing the various functions of transmission systems, the method of planning them in a large electricity supply system is explained. Decisions on construction made today must take into account the probable supply problems in the next 20 years. As the maximum voltage 380 kV will probably prove adequate in the German Federal Republic. Indicative values for short-circuit power and transmission capacity of the conductors are dealt with. Because of the high investment costs the use of simplified circuits must be aimed at, while retaining the reliability of the systems. Modern calculation procedures should contribute to the more rapid selection of the variants.
