The effect of the calcination temperature of coke used in the preparation of alumina reduction anodes on the anode polarization voltage (over-voltage) was measured in a laboratory test cell especially adapted for this purpose. The measurements made on a series of laboratory prepared samples were confirmed on cores taken from Soderberg anodes and by voltage measurements made directly in reduction cells. The effect of temperature on the electrical resistance of carbon was also measured.
