Qualitative differences in the pattern of the combustion-to-detonation transition (CDT) observed in an analysis of photographs of this process served as the basis for the concept of two types of CDT in porous explosives. The first type is characterized by development of detonation ahead of the flame front in nonburning material; the second involves formation of a bright luminous secondary wave in the burning medium behind the flame front. A new hypothesis is offered regarding the mechanism of the second type of CDT and formation of a secondary wave, which correlates with the experimental data.
