This new brake is spring-applied and electrically released. It generates braking forces by shearing the thin oil film established between sets of stationary and rotating discs. These plate-like discs are assembled into a disc pack installed in a sealed, oil-filled aluminum housing. The disc pack is used with a spring-loaded magnetic iron actuator and an electromagnetic coil. Energizing and de-energizing (normal state) the coil applies and releases the brake. This simple ON/OFF electrical control allows easy electromechanical or solid state interface to new and existing electrical and electronic machine-control systems. A totally enclosed, self-contained unit, the brake operates without generating wear or wear debris, appreciable noise or excessive heat.
