To obtain o-, m- and p-carborane-containing cellulose esters the authors acylated cellulose with the acid chlorides of o-, m- and p-carborane carboxylic acids in toluene in presence of pyridine. It was established that in these conditions the carbonate nucleus splits in the of o- and m-carborane acid chlorides to the dicarbaundecaborane anion, while acylation of cellulose proceeds only to an insignificant degree. The p-carborane and chloride actively interacts with cellulose with formation of the p-carborane-containing cellulose ester with 40% boron. Some properties of o-, m- and p-carborane-containing cellulose are studied.
