The technology of the 1990s appears to be that of the client-server approach. This concept brings the best of all worlds together. The PC drives the user interfaces and serves as control (client), while the mainframe provides the data repository (server). The workstation is becoming a many faceted reality. While a few high-performance systems are in place, such as graphics intensive Sum, Apollo, and Vax-based workstations, the emergence of 286- and 386-type PCs has created alternatives. (More n86-type processors are coming. Current PC standards are also discussed. Electronic mail and information systems are also briefly examined.
