Deep, abnormal-pressure, sour gas well development has resulted in the investigation of alternate alloys for use in high-pressure wellhead equipment. Evaluation of more traditional alloys produced results that were considered to be deficient for thick-wall, high-pressure equipment. A description is given of laboratory evaluations of a chromium-one percent molybdenum low alloy steel family that provides more uniform throughwall physical properties and manufacturing experience. Also described is a certification procedure that more closely approximates the metallurgical structure and physical properties for large, thick-wall, high-pressure equipment.
