The authors present a fluidized bed reactor model, based on the results of investigations into fluidized bed hydrodynamics, using industrially employed gas distributors. The model was verified using RTD measurement techniques and by determination of conversions for a fluidized bed reactor. For the conversion measurements, a model reaction was used, in this case the catalytic decomposition of ozone. Measurements were taken during experiments with porous plate, nozzle plate, and perforated plate gas distributors, with fluidized bed reactors 0. 2 m and 1. 0 m in diameter. Measured conversion values and those predicted by the model were compared. Rate constants were determined from a series of separate fixed bed measurements. The calculated and measured values of conversion were found to be in remarkably close agreement.
