Laminar-turbulent transition on the boundary of a supersonic free jet is studied in this paper. To analyze the flow character, measurements of density field, density fluctuations, and two-point space-time correlations were used. The technique was based on the Rayleigh light-scattering phenomena. The pulse laser technique was employed in the experiments. An additional similarity criterion is determined for the transitional flow of a supersonic jet. This is the relative roughness of the nozzle edge. Two scenarios of the transition to turbulence have been found. A significant difference of fluctuation spectra is shown for these scenarios. The transverse scale of fluctuations is measured.
