Solid state bonding of carbon steel and Al//2O//3 using Fe-FeO composite interlayers and fabrication of Fe-FeO composite materials were carried out by hot pressing at 1450 K for 36 ks in a vacuum of 10** minus **3 Pa under pressure of 29. 3 MPa. The interface chemistry and bonding strength were investigated by EPMA and an Instron testing machine. The system showed maximum tensile strength at 25 mol% FeO.
