Rigorous proofs have been developed of the theoretical relationship between conversion and contact-time distribution in isothermal heterogeneous reactors. When the reaction is first order the conversion is determined by the contact-time distribution and the reaction velocity constant, and when it is not first order the contact-time distribution and the reaction rate equation determine limits within which the conversion must lie.
